The buri palm is one of the largest palm trees found throughout the Philippines.
Young kernels of the fruit are edible and are made into a sweetmeats, while mature kernels are used as beads, rosaries and buttons.
Unopened leaves are used to make Calasiao or Pototan hats and the strips of the unopened leaf are made into hats, mats, bags, sails, basket, and other articles.
These seeds will expand in more humid and warmer climates, as well as shrink some in more cooler and dry climates. Buri Palm seed beads usually come from the Philippines where the climate is humid and warm. We hand-make all of our jewelry in the Texas Gulf Coast region. You may see some of the bead string or stretch cord when wore in cooler and dry climates. This is natural.
